Summary
THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE QUEEN
Nerissa Marin hides among teens in her human form, waiting for the day she can claim her birthright—the undersea kingdom stolen from her the day her father was murdered. Blending in is her best weapon—until her father's betrayer confronts Nerissa and challenges her to a battle to the death on Nerissa's upcoming birthday—the day she comes of age.
Amid danger and the heartbreak of her missing mother, falling for a human boy is the last thing Nerissa should do. But Lo Seavon breaches her defenses and somehow becomes the only person she can count on to help her desperate search for her mother, a prisoner of Nerissa's mortal enemy. Is Lo the linchpin that might win Nerissa back her crown? Or will this mortal boy become the weakness that destroys her?
Review
When I see the word “Mermaid”, I can't help but think of the myths and legends related to these aquatic creatures. By this novel, a new outlook is given. These “Mermaids” are not born from the depths of this planet's oceans, but from outer space, where they are more commonly known as the “Aquarathi”.
Mariana's Trench is the home to these graceful creatures, yet our story takes place with the princess of these people; Princess Nerissa. The story reveals that the princess has been hidden for her safety, taking refuge on the dry land masses that Earth has provided, and attends a basic high school; one that allows her to make a deep friendship with a human girl named Jenna. Due to her royal heritage, Nerissa is revealed to have a bratty side, but has been proven to be a strong female character who has trouble with her blood line. The princess is torn from either running away from her destiny, or accepting it and ruling over her people. Through the help of Jenna, a friend who tries her best to help out Nerissa with any situation she find herself in, the princess may find the right path to follow. What the princess doesn't know is that Lo, a mysterious young man, has strong feelings regarding her; feelings that the reader immediately picks up on when reading this story.
With this young adult novel's setting and characters, you may just find yourself connecting with this story and revealing that you have found an interesting book . Who I really recommend this to - those who love creatures not of this world, or those who have a strong love for mermaids.
