My Thoughts on the Book
This has got to be the best Werewolf Story I have read this year. From beginning to end the plotline of this book kept me hooked.
The characters of this book are well developed, unique and adding to the story in some way. Mackenzie (though everyone calls her Mac) is the main heroine of this story. She's been living with her cousin Tess for a while now, and it’s been 6 months after the death of her best friend Amy. She’s brave, willing to risk her life for her friends. Her willingness to sacrifice herself even extends to her quest to learning about what happen to her friend Amy. It’s interesting to see how Mac reacts to the male characters of the story. She has been friends with them for such a long time but suddenly one starts to show her his true feelings, while the other hides his feelings till the ending of the book.
Jason is someone I wouldn’t really like. He's a drinker and prone to getting into fights. I can see why he hates werewolves so much, but I think he goes too far he goes along with the trackers to hunt people who they “Think” could be werewolves. He’s a good guy when he isn’t drinking and trying to get himself or other people hurt. He's a character who grows and evolves, but I'm not going to tell you just how.
Kyle is a good friend to Mac, a protector to her. Even when Jason creates chaos, Kyle is there to help her. His big flaw is that he doesn't always tell the truth to Mac, although it's done in a way to protect her. He's liked Mac for a long time, but he flip-flops. He will go from wanting to be with Mac, to not wanting to be with her in a romantic way. This flip-flop goes on throughout the book, and it became annoying quickly. But, I suppose that a boy may really act like this if he wanted to protect the one he loves.
This story takes place in a small town called Hemlock. An ironic name, as hemlock is known as poisonous plant, with medical uses if given properly. Recently there have been werewolf attacks in the town, and one werewolf ended up attacking and killing Mac’s friend Amy. The story centers around Mac and her friends Jason and Kyle in how they deal in different ways of the trackers coming to town. Trackers are a non governmental operation (civilian) who take it upon themselves to track down werewolves and bring them (most of the time) to government owned facilities that house people infected of the werewolf syndrome. I find this to be an interesting idea, that being a werewolf is a virus or disease that must be controlled, not just a magic spell or curse that's passed along with a bite. While not appropriate, I can see people behaving like the trackers if this happened in real life.
The romance in this story is good, although I got annoyed every time Kyle would change his mind about whether or not to be with Mac. Everything in this story is center around Amy and her death and whether it really was a werewolf that killed her or was it something more then just that. Mac and Kyle gather information as they track down the real story of how Amy dies.
